The National Platform - Integrated Sustainable Waste Management - Sri Lanka is a collective effort for adopting integrated, economically feasible and environmentally sound sustainable waste management practices in Sri Lanka. It intends to integrate efforts from government institutions, private sector firms and civil society organizations.
 
 
Intergrated Sustainable Waste Management National Forum - Sri Lanka
  Community Based Solid Waste Management Project in Kalmunai, Ampara District  
 
• Aims & objectives: o Change attitudes of the communities to managing their solid waste by applying environmentally friendly low cost methods o Promote NGO + Community + ULA partnership in project management o Demonstrate resource recovery capability of community based SWM projects • Main activities: o Awareness raising on source segregation of waste o Recruit & train field project staff o Deliver compost bins and other accessories o Collect recyclable waste separately o Establish a collection centre for recyclable waste o Processing of recyclable items for sale o Organize sale of recyclables o Promote use of compost for home gardening o Assist the municipality to extend this type of SWM projects • Expected outcomes: o About 1650 families manage their solid waste in an environmentally friendly manner o Collection and sale centre for recyclable waste established o At least 50% of compost bin recipients engage in home gardening
